9: I sent a brief letter to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, does not acknowledge our authority.
Luke 9:48

Luke 22:24

- Jesus told them, "In this world the kings and great men order their people around, and yet they are called 'friends of the people.'
- But among you, those who are the greatest should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.
- Normally the master sits at the table and is served by his servants. But not here! For I am your servant.
Titus 1:7
- An elder must live a blameless life because he is God's minister. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money.
- He must enjoy having guests in his home and must love all that is good. He must live wisely and be fair. He must live a devout and disciplined life.
- He must have a strong and steadfast belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with right teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.
- For there are many who rebel against right teaching; they engage in useless talk and deceive people. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation.
- They must be silenced. By their wrong teaching, they have already turned whole families away from the truth. Such teachers only want your money.

- But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.

- Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do us a favor."
- "What is it?" he asked.
- "In your glorious Kingdom, we want to sit in places of honor next to you," they said, "one at your right and the other at your left."
- But Jesus answered, "You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of sorrow I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?"
- "Oh yes," they said, "we are able!" And Jesus said, "You will indeed drink from my cup and be baptized with my baptism,
Matthew 23:4
- They crush you with impossible religious demands and never lift a finger to help ease the burden.
- "Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear extra long tassels on their robes.
- And how they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the most prominent seats in the synagogue!
- They enjoy the attention they get on the streets, and they enjoy being called 'Rabbi.'
- Don't ever let anyone call you 'Rabbi,' for you have only one teacher, and all of you are on the same level as brothers and sisters.
Philippians 2:3
- Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself.
- Don't think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.
- Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had.
Matthew 10:40
- "Anyone who welcomes you is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.
- If you welcome a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will receive the same reward a prophet gets. And if you welcome good and godly people because of their godliness, you will be given a reward like theirs.
